The second day Jason spoke about activism coming from the porn industry, and the work of Porn4PrEP in collaboration with healthcare institutions. The work was highlighted along with the teaching approach of context-dependent memory: a psychological principle that found when a learner is in the same emotional state as when they learned information, they can recall that information 50% better. This principle is well-known and applied in many industries but rarely applied to sex education. If harm from STIs is to be taken seriously, the approach should be explored. Porn4PrEP was doing just that.

The third day Jason reminded those in the forum the importance of not separating HIV stigma from homophobia, as he had noticed during attendance. Yes, not everyone who catches HIV is a gay man. But addressing homophobia is a very direct way of reducing HIV stigma, which has become very intertwined culturally. Reducing homophobia can reduce barriers for some people coming in for HIV testing, regardless of their sexuality. Jason listed a number of effective ways that homophobia can be addressed: from the obvious, such as decriminalisation in nations; to the often overlooked, such as perspectives addressing hygiene fears surrounding anal sex by making douching more common knowledge. Other methods included the alternative interpretations of original Abrahamic faith texts. A link was made between patriarchal cultures and seeing homosexuality as more feminine, suggesting that gay men could be treated with less respect in this circumstance. All these approaches had impacts on HIV rates by fear of association.

During the forum, Jason and Ashton participated and spoke in a number of specialist sessions, such as asking what the world had learned from watching the UK try for PrEP. Porn4PrEP was well received and made its mark for porn actors.

Performed by the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts and directed by Gareth Taylor, TrU-CArE was a verbatim play for the group’s MA project. Real people were interviewed around the topic of PrEP, which the actors would then reenact sections of, capturing aspects of their character’s personality.

The play is the result of stringing together many of these interviews. The loose plot explores and highlights pros and cons of the UK offering PrEP. Greg Owen, founder of I Want PrEP Now, was the main character, with the play recounting key moments in his personal history and investigating the perceived dualities in his character.

Porn4PrEP had its own room: a portal into being a newbie to the porn industry. We had three performers: Jason Domino as a porn actor experiencing electro play, Tegwyn teaching guests how to use tools like the violet wand, and Jason Moon filming and directing the ‘scene’.

During our exhibit, guests had a conversation with the performers about what it’s like to start off in the porn industry. The focus was on sexual health and protection, allowing guests to learn in an experiential format. At the end of the performance, guests were sent to the next room of the house and told to ‘prepare for their own scene’.
When initially asked by Love Matters, it struck us as sex through the lens of poetry and art, rather than the reality that people experience. We suggested running an explicit scene to keep the focus on sex, but the original venue took issue with the idea. This shows that censorship can obstruct transparent conversation about sex, even in an exhibition dedicated to the topic. Love Matters found a new venue, and changed the scene to electro play, allowing guests to be more involved without the need to show something as explicit.

Brighton Sexpression Conference 2016 ended with a chance for the participants to ask any questions they had about PrEP. Jason Domino was accompanied by Greg Owen and Dr Will Nutland. Together they addressed questions ranging from strategy planning to the social impact of making medication like PrEP available.

The conference ran over two days and had a number of in-depth lectures on sexual topics in today’s society. Importantly, stigma towards people living with HIV was explored and the phrase “Undetectable means Uninfectious” was echoed. They are powerful words that dispel fears for HIV negative people; fears that they could catch HIV from a correctly-medicated person living with HIV on anti-retroviral therapy.

“Undetectable” refers to a medical state that someone living with HIV can reach. It’s a state where a person’s viral load is too small for modern equipment to detect. Modern viral counting machines can pick up on a viral load as low as 20 in someones blood. By comparison, a viral load of 500 is needed before an infection can be transmitted from anal sex. 1,000 needed for transmission via vaginal sex. It is also worth pointing out that there are no validated cases of people catching HIV from oral sex. There has however always been a theorised risk if the person’s mouth has some internal damage or a localised infection.
