Performed by the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts and directed by Gareth Taylor, TrU-CArE was a verbatim play for the group’s MA project. Real people were interviewed around the topic of PrEP, which the actors would then reenact sections of, capturing aspects of their character’s personality.

The play is the result of stringing together many of these interviews. The loose plot explores and highlights pros and cons of the UK offering PrEP. Greg Owen, founder of I Want PrEP Now, was the main character, with the play recounting key moments in his personal history and investigating the perceived dualities in his character.

As a guest speaker at the 19th Annual NHIVNA Conference, Jason discusses topics including: his personal history, the Porn4PrEP campaign, the impact of bareback porn on viewers, psychology and sex education, and how to yield better results. The talk ends with a Q&A session with the audience.

The event was an opportunity for us to hold interviews, showcase our film’s progress, and raise awareness of the Porn4PrEP campaign within the adult industry. Guests were also invited to take selfies behind campaign banners in our photo booth.

Brighton Sexpression Conference 2016 ended with a chance for the participants to ask any questions they had about PrEP. Jason Domino was accompanied by Greg Owen and Dr Will Nutland. Together they addressed questions ranging from strategy planning to the social impact of making medication like PrEP available.

The conference ran over two days and had a number of in-depth lectures on sexual topics in today’s society. Importantly, stigma towards people living with HIV was explored and the phrase “Undetectable means Uninfectious” was echoed. They are powerful words that dispel fears for HIV negative people; fears that they could catch HIV from a correctly-medicated person living with HIV on anti-retroviral therapy.

“Undetectable” refers to a medical state that someone living with HIV can reach. It’s a state where a person’s viral load is too small for modern equipment to detect. Modern viral counting machines can pick up on a viral load as low as 20 in someones blood. By comparison, a viral load of 500 is needed before an infection can be transmitted from anal sex. 1,000 needed for transmission via vaginal sex. It is also worth pointing out that there are no validated cases of people catching HIV from oral sex. There has however always been a theorised risk if the person’s mouth has some internal damage or a localised infection.

On 22nd October, the team from Porn4PrEP ran a series of workshops as part of the Brighton Sexpression Conference.
Workshops had around 20 participants from a wide-ranging backgrounds. The structure of the workshop was for participants to pretend that they were new recruits to the world of adult film. Sexual health, the adult film industry and personal lives were then explored in an experiential way to teach the topic at hand. Students had to regularly participate in group activities and role play scenarios.

Feedback from Sexpression was very positive and workshops were overbooked. A lot was learned by Porn4PrEP too: successfully translating lessons into a workshop required planning and presentation skills. Jason from the team then spoke at a PrEP open-panel debate at the larger conference.

HustlaBall 2016 was full of big names and sweaty bodies eager to party until the early hours. The weekend event was an award show in the city of Berlin. Porn stars from all over the globe came together at the KitKatClub to see and congratulate the winners.

Porn4PrEP was very involved in this year’s show. Jason Domino represented the project and spoke to the crowds from stage. The crowd were told about how studios and actors were pulling together under the project to raise awareness of PrEP and combat HIV stigma in particular. Jason was asked to give out the Best Bareback Scene award at the show to symbolise the importance of dialogue on the topic.

HustlaBall Berlin allowed the team from Porn4PrEP to film interviews with attending porn stars. The filmed interviews will be used in the next production by Porn4PrEP. Jason used this opportunity to wish performers luck at the awards, and brief them if they wanted to be interviewed.

The government describes Public Health England (PHE) as an organisation “making the public healthier by encouraging discussions, advising government and supporting action by local government, the NHS and other people and organisations”.

During the meeting, Jason Domino represented the needs of the adult entertainment and sex work industries. Jason reflected on PHE’s proposals and contributed to discussions when there where clear clashes from the perspective of an adult performers, a demographic generally considered high-risk.

PHE plans to put together a strategy to help the NHS with the logistical complications of providing PrEP. Strategies developed to help the NHS focus on making sure PrEP is distributed effectively, while minimising PrEP being offered to low-risk cases which could have cost implications for the NHS.
